Jean-Maxime Dufresne

Jean-Maxime Dufresne (b. 1973) is a Montreal-based artist with a training in architecture (McGill University) and multimedia studies (UQÀM), whose investigations deal with urban and social territories, as well as the transformations that shape them. In his work, architectural inquiry and artistic agency are reconsidered through the multifaceted means of installation, photography, sound, video, intervention and printed matter. Delving into fictional, research-action and documentary strategies, such explorations use the speculative force of post-architectural scenarios and have ties to the critical field of spatial practices.

Working with artist Virginie Laganière, he is currently producing new research that looks into the afterlife and narratives of complex and often controversial Olympic sites (Centre VU Photo, Quebec City Biennial, 2014). He is involved with the Adaptive Actions (AA) platform as a co- editor and core contributor to Heteropolis, a conceptual framework manifested variously through publications, workshops and public interventions.

Recent exhibitions and residencies include La Biennale de Montréal; Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal; 3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo; Titanik Gallery, Turku; Inside-Out Art Museum Residency, Beijing; Homesession Art Space, Barcelona; RAW Material Company, Dakar.
