Based in Durham-Sud, Canada, Richard Ibghy & Marilou Lemmens have developed a collaborative practice that spans across multiple media, including video, performance and installation. Their work is concerned with how the social and economic sciences and theories of management represent the world and the ways these representations participate in producing new forms of subjectivity. Taking an approach that is at once conceptual, material and often physical, grounded in research and relying on the subversion of conduct, they seek to expose and counter the influence of neoliberalism’s rationality on the most intimate aspects of life. The notion of labour, as seen through the lens of its most recent transformations and its emphasis on performance, is central to their approach as it exemplifies the capacity of economic thought to shape and orient subjects.

While at HIAP, we are interested in the possibility of giving a determinate or concrete expression to what has been abstracted, but also in the potential of art to confront abstraction with its refuse, with materiality, with imperfections and with the body. —Richard Ibghy & Marilou Lemmens
