Alexandra Clod (Krolikowska) is an interdisciplinary artist and psychologist based in Kyiv (b. 1990, Ukraine). Utilizing analog photography, video, and performance in art practice, she explores the topics of mythological thinking, ancient beliefs and rituals, and the inseparable connectedness of humans and nature. She is also interested in the relations between individual wholeness and social coherence, and how political borders shape people’s mindset.
Being born and shaped in the coal mining context in Donetsk, Alexandra dedicates her recent project “Katabasis” within the Re-Grounding residence (UK/Ukraine) to the impact of industrial heritage on the current environmental crisis.
She is currently working on her MA thesis on the psychotherapeutic function of photography within studies on Counselling Psychology at the Pereyaslav University of H.Skoworoda.
During the residency, Alexandra explores the mythological aspects of borders, defense, and fortification. She plans to make an installation dedicated to creating military borders, in particular, an anti-tank system called “dragon’s teeth”. Alexandra compares the archetypal meaning of the image of a dragon in Slavic and European folklore with the current geopolitical situation and the empires’ ambitions to change the world map by biting off parts of other countries’ territories. In this work, she combines her personal experience of being twice a displaced person in Ukraine and her research on the relations between ancient mythology and how specific fairy-tale-like scenarios are presented nowadays.
Alexandra Krolikowska’s residency is realised in the context of the Ukraine Solidarity Residencies programme.
