Antone Liu

Deeply invested in transcultural narratives and the history of design and manufacturing, his research and works tickle the precariousness and shifts in perceptions of humanity. Liu repeatedly deliberates and finds unexpected intersections among these evolving paths. With humour and recalling familiar household objects like drying rack, pillow cases, belts and so on, Liu creates performative surfaces with handcrafted practice.

During my HIAP residency, I will continue my series on the drying of laundry, with a focus on temporary living situations. August marks the start of the academic year in Finland, with many foreign students arriving and adapting to new cultures and living conditions, often without home conveniences like proper drying racks. Improvising, they use suitcases, doors, windowsills, and found sticks to dry laundry, reflecting their transient existence. I found this special temporary living situation profound, and I will start from interviews with foreign students and other temporary residents, along with archives of Finnish laundry culture.

Antone Liu’s residency at HIAP is realised in the context of a residency exchange between HIAP and basis e.V. with the support of the City of Frankfurt’s Department for Culture.
