Yiqing Chen

Yiqing Chen is a London-based Chinese artist and digital director. His practice focus on technological infrastructure behind globalized virtual industry and ethnic minorities in Southwest China. His works spans documentary, CGI and game/XR, overlaping virtual with material reality by infusing research into fictional media.

Yiqing’s works exhibited at ICA (London, UK); MEET Digital Culture Center (Milan, Italy); ESPRONCEDA Institute of Art & Culture (Barcelona, Spain) and so on. Yiqing was awarded winner of Artathon Gdańsk, LAZNIA Centre for Contemporary Art, as part of Augmented Europe funded by Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency of the European Commission.


Playing an important role on electric-vehicle battery mineral extraction and recovery in Europe, Finland has rich mineral resources as well as renewable electricity and transportation advantages.My residency project spans from research on Chinese battery factories clustered in Kotka (Northern side of the Gulf of Finland) to the China-oriented electric vehicle industry and the concept of the car as time machine in sci-fi literature.

The project is developed as photographic survey and will be produced as new sci-fi digital film in 2025, with support of Conditions digital lab.
