Sung woo Kim

Sung woo Kim (b. 1981) was born in Korea, and currently lives and works in Korea and U.K. He studied MFA Curating in Goldsmiths College, University of London, and also had a educational background of Museum management in Korea. He was a person in charge of Asian artists in Busan Biennale, and currently working as an independent curator in contemporary art field as well as he is in activity as an international curatorial member for Artist Pension Trust to promote emerging artists around the world.

His current curatorial research explores nuances between individual memory and history floating in certain space and time. Through the exploration, he traces power relations in historicising certain stories of the past, and poses questions in between ‘non-official’ stories forbidden from and ‘official’ stories documented in history. And over his curatorial research, he sheds lights on the past with different viewpoint, and apply it to diagnose present condition with taking the active role of the past.

During the residency, Sung woo aims to research Finnish contemporary artists, art projects, exhibitions and events based on specific narratives regarding local events and contexts in Finland. On this sense, the narrative could be a wide range of individual stories that is opposite or slightly different from the official stories in history. In parallel with it, he will research a variety of methodologies for visualising such narratives in Finnish contemporary art.
