HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme is an international artist residency organisation established in 1998.

The HIAP residency programme offers time and space for developing new work in dialogue with the local art scene. The goal is to support experimental, cross-disciplinary art practices and to actively contribute to topical debates within and around the context of art.

Recent HIAP projects and collaborations include Post-Fossil Transition (2018-2020), So long, thanks agains for the fish (2021) and Ukraine Solidarity Residencies Network (2022-).

HIAP residencies in Suomenlinna & Cable Factory

HIAP offers residencies for artists, curators and other cultural practitioners in Suomenlinna island and Cable Factory in Helsinki. The residency periods are between 1-11 months. The residencies offer time and space open-ended research and exploration.

Villa Eläintarha

HIAP coordinates the reservations for Villa Eläintarha artist residency. The villa has seven rooms available for short-term (from 1 week to 2 months) production residencies. Villa Eläintarha is one of the remaining wooden villas at Linnunlaulu and a piece of urban villa culture in Helsinki from the turn of the 20th century.

Ecological Travel

HIAP is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of the organisation’s activities. Therefore we encourage the residents and our partner organisations to arrange travel to Helsinki via land or sea.

VISITING HIAP

HIAP Gallery Augusta, the Project Space, office and the Suomenlinna residency studios are located on Suomenlinna island, near the centre of Helsinki. There is a regular connection from the Market Square (Kauppatori) to Suomenlinna. Find the HSL ferry (operating all year round) timetable here.

The HIAP Studios at the Cable Factory (Tallberginkatu 1) are located at staircase C on the 4th floor.

Accessibility

ACCESSIBILITY / HIAP Suomenlinna
Accessing part of the HIAP studios, office, Gallery Augusta & Project Space by wheelchair is possible but we recommend to be accompanied by a person assisting because the entrance doors are not step-free. The HIAP toilets are not wheelchair-accessible but you can find accessible toilets on five different locations on the island indicated on this map. The closest one to the HIAP Studios is located in the Summer Theatre (building nr 36 on the Suomenlinna visitors’ map). We are happy to help you plan your visit. ACCESSIBILITY / HIAP Cable Factory
There is a ramp at the main entrance of the building providing access to staircase C and from there to the elevator that leads to the 4th floor, where the HIAP studios are located.

The studios can also be accessed from outdoors without any impediment by using the elevator in staircase B. After reaching the 4th floor and exiting the elevator, one needs to pass through the doors (2 or 3, depending on which studio one wishes to reach) of the corridor that leads from staircase B to staircase C. These doors are not equipped with an automatic opening mechanism.
