Ahmet Öğüt
Ahmet Öğüt (b. 1981)
Born in Diyarbakir, Turkey, Ahmet Öğüt lives and works in Istanbul, Amsterdam and Berlin. He earned a BA from Hacettepe University, Turkey, an MA from Yildiz Teknik University, Turkey. Working across a variety of media, Öğüt has gained international acclaim for his subtle references to complex topics including religion, social and rural customs, and the spectre of war, often offset by an edge of humor.
His recent solo exhibitions include When the axis of the Hamster’s wheel is lodged inside Sisyphus’ boulder, Stacion – Center for Contemporary Art Prishtina (2013), This exhibition’s factual accuracy may be compromised due to its practical nature, Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Stuttgart (2012), Ahmet Ögüt, Protocinema/Itinerant, New York (2012), Modern Essays 1: Across the Slope, SALT, Istanbul (2011). He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions including A History of Inspiration, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, FR (2013), 7th Liverpool Biennial, UK (2012), 53rd October Salon, Belgrade, Serbia (2012), 12th Istanbul Biennial, Turkey (2011), 2011 Asian Art Biennial, Taiwan (2011).
Öğüt has completed several residency programs such as the ones at Delfina Foundation and Tate Modern, UK (2012), IASPIS, Sweden (2011), Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (2007–2008). He has taught in Dutch Art Institute, Netherlands (2012), Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Finland (2011 and 2013) among others. Öğüt was awarded with the special prize of the Future Generation Art Prize, Pinchuk Art Centre, Ukraine (2012), De Volkskrant Beeldende Kunst Prijs 2011, Netherlands (2011), Kunstpreis Europas Zukunft, Museum of Contemporary Art, Germany (2010). He co-represented Turkey at the 53rd Venice Biennale together with Banu Cennetoğlu.
