HIAP Supporting Curators 2019-2020

We are happy to announce the HIAP Supporting Curators for year 2019 and spring 2020! It has been a pleasure to work with Laura Toots & Marten Esko during this spring, and we look forward to having Saara Karhunen, Marina Noronha and Maaretta Jaukkuri as supporting curators in the coming months! The curators meet up with the HIAP residents on a regular basis to have a dialogue with them about their work.

In addition we are happy to continue to work with our Associate Curators Jenni Nurmenniemi (Post-Fossil Transition project with Mustarinda), Miina Hujala & Arttu Merimaa (Connecting Points) and Martin Born (Helsinki Design Residency) as well as our collaboration with Perpetuum Mobile (AR-Safe Haven Helsinki).

Spring 2019

Laura Toots is a curator and educator based in Tallinn. Toots studied photography at the Estonian Academy of Arts (MA 2011) and at the Aalto University School of Art and Design, Finland and Bergen National Academy of the Arts, Norway. Since 2008, she has taught at the Estonian Academy of Arts, working on numerous exhibition projects with students from various disciplines. Currently Toots works as the artistic director of the Tallinn Photomonth contemporary art biennial and as a curator at the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM) in Tallinn.

Marten Esko is a curator, writer and art-worker based in Tallinn. His practise in general has focused on different formats or platforms of exhibiting and exhibition-making, with both material and conceptual approaches towards the production of knowledge and awareness. Marten is one of the managers as well as board members of Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM). He is also a board member of the Tallinn Print Triennial Foundation and the publishing collective Uus Materjal (New Material).

Summer 2019

Saara Karhunen is a Helsinki based art historian working versatilely in the art field. From 2013 to 2017 she worked as a coordinator at Checkpoint Helsinki, now Publics, developing the organisation and delivering a wide range of commissioned projects and events. She has also worked at the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Galerie Anhava, HIAP, Kiasma and as a freelance producer. She is a contributor to Mustekala, an online magazine publishing art criticisim and essays on contemporary culture, and is currently Mustekala’s chair of board. Saara holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Helsinki.

Autumn 2019

Marina Valle Noronha (Brazil/ Finland) is an independent curator and doctoral candidate at Aalto University, Finland where she researches curatorial theory. Marina has worked as a curator at HIAP (Finland), El Museo del Barrio (USA), and Fundação Municipal de Cultura (Brazil) among others, and has developed curatorial projects at institutions such as Delfina Foundation (UK), Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo (Italy), Hessel Museum of Art (USA), and Moderna Museet (Sweden). She holds a MA in Curatorial Studies from CCS Bard (USA), a B.Sc. (Honours) in Architecture from UFMG (Brazil), and attended CuratorLab postgraduate course at Konstfack, (Sweden). Marina was a Brooks Fellow at Tate Liverpool (UK) in 2016.

Spring 2020

Maaretta Jaukkuri studied English philology and art history at the University of Helsinki 1964-1970. In 1970-1983 she worked as Exhibitions and Information Secretary at the Artists’ Association of Finland. In the years 1983-1989 she was the Head of Exhibitions at The Nordic Arts Centre, Suomenlinna, Helsinki. 1990-2007 she worked as chief curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art (from 1998 Kiasma). She was a professor of the “Art and Common Space” program for art and architecture students at the Art Academy of Trondheim, Faculty of Architecture and Design, NTNU in the period 2004-2006 (full time) and 2006-2013 (part time). In 2007-2010 she worked as artistic director of Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo. In 2012-2014 she was a professor of the new Praxis curatorial program at the Helsinki University of the Arts / Fine Arts Academy of Finland. She has also worked as freelance curator of several exhibitions e.g. the Nordic Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 1988. She was one of the curators of the section “Roteiros, roterois” at the São Paulo Biennale 1988. In 2015 she curated the video exhibition “Here out There” of female Chinese artists in the auspices of the Helsinki Festival. During 1989-1998 and 2007-2015 she was the curator of the international sculpture programme Artscape Nordland. The project consists of 36 permanent, site-specific sculptures in the municipalities of the County of Nordland, North Norway. From 2016 until present she has been the curator of the Hanasaari Picture Park. She lives in Helsinki, Finland.
