Past Residency Exchanges

SPACE Art +Technology (London, United Kingdom) 2017

The residency programme for Finnish artists in London was hosted by SPACE Art +Technology residency programme in collaboration with HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme and Finnish Institute in London.

SPACE Art +Technology residencies are a community of experimental thought and practice. The programme is a period of development, immersion and investigation for artists developing research and questions at the nexus of art and technology.

Center for Contemporary Art Tbilisi (Georgia)

Helsinki-Tbilisi Residency Exchange offered residencies for Finnish artists in Center of Contemporary Art – Tbilisi and for Georgian artists in HIAP, Helsinki. The exchange programme was co-organised by HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme, Center of Contemporary Art – Tbilisi and Art School MAA, Helsinki. The exchange was supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation as part of HIAP Osmosis programme.

Center of Contemporary Art – Tbilisi is an independent, nonprofit organization. CCA-Tbilisi is acting as a hub in Georgia, linking and working with similar organizations around the world. The center works on contextualization of contemporary visual culture and helps Georgian and international artists to effectively present creative production to local and international audiences.

The residencies in Helsinki are arranged in collaboration with Art School MAA, Suomenlinna, Helsinki, as part of the school’s curriculum.

Lighthouse (Brighton, United Kingdom) 2015–2016

The residency programme for Finnish artists in Brighton was hosted by Lighthouse, a digital culture agency, supporting, commissioning and exhibiting work by artists and filmmakers, based in central Brighton. The residency was organised in collaboration with HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme and Finnish Institute in London.

Lighthouse connects new developments in arts, culture and technology. Based in Brighton, it supports, connects and shares new works of art, film, music, design and other new forms of creativity, that explore the social, cultural, political, environmental and economic effects of new technologies on our lives. Lighthouse has worked with artists, makers  and thinkers such as Metahaven, Holly Herndon, Basia Lewandowska Cummings, Kuedo, Lars TCF Holdhus, Eleni Ikoniadou, Jananne al-Ani, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Hito Steyerl and Nathan Jurgenson.

Matadero Madrid, El Ranchito Finland (Madrid, Spain) 2014 & 2016

Encouraging dialogue between artists, architects, curators, thinkers, and other creative practitioners, El Ranchito is a residency programme that brings together a cross-disciplinary group of creators. Together they investigate the questions pertinent to creative processes today.

During El Ranchito residencies, creative practitioners spanning various disciplines, nationalities and origins share their individual work with the creation of an artistic community within a shared, open space at Matadero Madrid and in other international art centres. The residencies are structured around two time frames: one focused on workspaces, and a second for presenting the results to the general public.

El Ranchito Finland exchange was realised twice, in 2014 and 2016. The exchange offered 4 Finnish artists a residency in Madrid and later on a residency for 4 Spanish artists in Finland in 2014, and in a similar manner residencies for 2 Finnish and 2 Spanish artist in 2016. The exchange programme was co-produced by HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme, Matadero Madrid and AECID.

The Nordic Art Association (Stockholm, Sweden) 2015–2016

HIAP arranged artist and curator residencies in collaboration with The Nordic Art Association in Stockholm, Sweden. The NKF (founded in 1945) arranges international residencies in the Malongen residency studio in Stockholm.

Via Farini (Milan, Italy)

The exchange with Via Farini in Milan, Italy offered Finnish and Italian artists and curators residencies in Milan and Helsinki.
