Open call for artistic residencies in Antwerp, Helsinki, Warsaw and Ramallah

Everyday Forms of Resistance is an exchange program that has come about as a result of the collaboration between AIR Antwerpen; Ujazdowski Castle Center for Contemporary Art, Warsaw; Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP); and the Municipality of Ramallah. This project offers residencies for six visual artists and centers itself on the question: “Can an artistic intervention translate social tensions into narratives that in turn intervene in the imaginary landscape of a place?” (Francis Alÿs, The Green Line, 2004). It looks at the role of artistic practice and mobility in the specific circumstances of Ramallah and Palestine and does this through the strategy of exchange.

The first part of the residencies (April-June 2019) is open to artists from Belgium, Finland, and Poland. In total three artists, one from each of these countries, will be selected to spend three months living and working in the city of Ramallah. The second part of the residencies (Autumn 2019) is open to Palestinian artists and will enable them to spend a three-month residency in Warsaw, Antwerp, or Helsinki. Each country will host one Palestinian artist. The exchange program, modeled to encourage artists to engage in conversations among themselves and with their audiences, will culminate in a series of talks and meetings in the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw in November 2019.

This open call is for art practitioners working in the field of visual arts in its broadest sense. A professional committee will select artists based on the professional excellence of the applicant’s work. The committee members are Jack Persekian, Director Al Ma’mal Foundation, Jerusalem; Yazid Anani, Director of the Public Program at Qattan Foundation; Reem Fadda, Curator of Ramallah Municipality/Qalandiya International; Sally Abu Bakr, Director of the department Culture and Social Affairs at Ramallah Municipality; Alan Quireyns, Artistic Director AIR Antwerpen; Ika Sienkiewicz-Nowacka, Head of Artistic Residencies at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, Warsaw; Juha Huuskonen, Director HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme. This committee will announce the results of their evaluation of the submitted applications by 30 November, 2018.

Residency benefits include:

• A monthly per diem of 600 EUR;

• Invidividual living space;

• Production costs;

• Reimbursement of one return ticket to and from the place of residency;

• The organization of a public event during the residencies;

• Organising a customised programme of study visits in and outside Ramallah

• Please note that visa fees or insurance costs connected to visa applications are not covered.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES

HIAP is now seeking applications from visual artists who live and work in Finland. Via this open call one Finnish artist will be selected for a one-month residency in Ramallah within the period of April-June 2019.

Please note, that if you are a resident in Belgium, Poland or Palestine, you should apply in the open call organised by the institution that is based in your country of residence. Applicants can apply for more than one residency. Palestinian artists who wish to apply for a residency in Helsinki at HIAP can apply via an open call organised by Ramallah municipality. Please see further information on Ramallah municipality’s website.

Application period is from 28 September to 31 October 2018.

Selected artists will be announced in November 2018.

Applicants to the Everyday Forms of Resistance exchange program should be residents in one of the four countries: Belgium, Finland, Poland, or Palestine.
