In Soliloquy, Lene Baadsvig Ørmen will show a new body of sculptural work, realised during her residency at HIAP. As often in her work, a medley of references from antecedent forms of life meet current popular aesthetics and imagined forms from future cultures.

The word soliloquy refers to a device used in drama when a character speaks aloud to zirself. Through an intuitive process Baadsvig Ørmen’s work allows one form to emerge after another. As if she is wrestling with her thoughts through matter, implying the work to be a series of unspoken reflections. In the cavernous halls of Gallery Augusta, large forms sculpted in concrete and sand forge abstract formations on the floor – while familiar protagonists from 20th century popular culture supplant small Ushabti figurines made of clay.

The exploration of language is a key thread in Baadsvig Ørmen’s work, as her sculptural constellations frame their own universe of language in form. Another is a curiosity towards time loops. With their seemingly unrefined object quality and ambiguous temporality, the sculptures seem to hover in a space outside time – somewhere between the past and possible futures.

Lene Baadsvig Ørmen (b. 1984) graduated from the Oslo National Academy of fine Arts in 2013. Her most recent solo exhibitions include ”Fret Not Upon Thy Blue Funk” at Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo (2016), ”Dear Darkling” at UKS in Oslo, ”X4” at Kunsthall Stavanger and ”TURBID” at Another Space in Copenhagen. Selected group exhibitions include “The Drawing Biennale (2016)” in Oslo, ”Neolithic Graffiti” at QB Gallery in Oslo, “Lopsided Upthrust” at Gallery BOA in Oslo, ”Seeing Through Abstraction” at Residency Unlimited in New York, ”One eyed date” at Autocenter in Berlin and ”Popular Hybrid Trees” at Fat Relic in London.
