Meet the Curator: Tobi Maier
HIAP in collaboration with Frame Visual Art Finland present a Meet the Curator event with Tobi Maier (Brazil/Germany) on Wednesday, 17 December, 11 am–1 pm at Frame Visual Art Finland.
In 2013 Maier co-edited the double issue of the Swedish art and literature magazine OEI #60/61, “Extra-disciplinary spaces and de-disciplinisizing moments. In and out of the 30th Biennial de São Paulo” and in 2014 OEI #66, “poema/processo”. At the event he will present material from these magazines, as well as some other recent writing on Brazilian artists and events such as Hudinilson Jr., the 3rd Bahia Biennial and Teatro da Vertigem.
Tobi Maier is a German freelance curator and art critic based in São Paulo, Brazil. Previously he was a curator at Frankfurter Kunstverein (2006–08), Ludlow 38, New York (2008–11) and the 30. São Paulo Biennial (2011–12). Recent exhibitions curated by Maier include The Second Sex – A Visual Footnote at La Galerie, Noisy-le-Sec, Paris; Was ist Kunst – Mirrors of Production at Galeria Jaqueline Martins, São Paulo; Marcelo Cipis, Prêmio Funarte de Arte Contemporânea 2013 – Galerias Funarte de Artes Visuals São Paulo and Alexandre Brandão at Oficina Cultural Oswald de Andrade, São Paulo (all 2013).
Tobi Maier holds a MA in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art in London and is participating in the PhD programme at Escola das Comunicações e Artes at Universidade de São Paulo (USP). He contributes to a variety of art journals and lectures frequently. Tobi Maier’s residency in Helsinki is realised in the context of Helsinki International Curatorial Programme (HICP), co-organised by HIAP and Frame Visual Art Finland.
