Anna Moreno: The Whole World Will Be Singing
February 25th, 6-8 pm
When Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev came to Finland for (the then President) Urho Kekkonen’s 60th birthday, the two stayed in the sauna until 5 o’clock in the morning. As Finland’s then-Secretary of State Pertti Torstila recounted: “At the end of the visit a communiqué was issued in which the Soviet government expressed its preparedness to support Finland’s desire to integrate and cooperate with the West.”
As a first episode of a trilogy, The whole world will be singing functions as a scenario to be activated by the invited guests during an event at HIAP’s Project Space. The installation has been constructed with the collaboration of different professionals from the regions of Lahti and Tampere, adding notions like negotiation, authorship and honesty to the project, notions that will be addressed during this performative event. The whole world will be singing presents itself as a twisted time-capsule: From the 70s to the beginning of the 20th century, to a future post-apocalyptic reality, the display borrows aspects from functionalist design, Ballardian futurism and misplaced foundational myths.
