The participants of the ninth edition of the Helsinki Design Residency meet at the Design Museum on September 10. We invite everyone to take part in this open seminar that explores the theme of this year’s Helsinki Design Residency, ”Intelligences,” through the lens of design practice.
Mirroring the experience of a multi-modal world, the work of contemporary designers embraces and is shaped by the heterogeneity of ways of sensing, making sense of and corresponding with the world. The resistances of different physical and digital materials, the logics and logistics of code-based planetarity, interactions with the animate environment, bodily time and, increasingly, the space of language populated by practice-based research combine to shape a composite domain of action and perception that in its diversity impacts thus jointly on the imaginaries design produces today.
Responding to its this year’s headline, “Intelligences,” Maxim Spivakov (RU), Mikaela Steby Stenfalk (SE) and Mayumi Niiranen-Hisatomi (JP/FI) have been investigating this multiple condition in the framework of the 2020 Helsinki Design Residency program. The three designers and researchers will present their projects and findings in a panel discussion with Nicolay Boyadjiev (Strelka Institute) and Magnus Ericsson (Iaspis) moderated by Martin Born, program curator of the Helsinki Design Residency.

Tänä vuonna yhdeksättä kertaa toteutuva Helsinki Design Residency on muotoilijaresidenssi, johon on valittu kolme kansainvälistä suunnittelualan ammattilaista. Residenssikauden aikana he paneutuvat tutkimuksellisesti muotoilun ajankohtaisiin toimintatapoihin. Designmuseossa järjestettävässä seminaarissa tutustutaan residenssin aikana syntyneisiin innovatiivisiin suunnitteluprojekteihin. Tänä vuonna suunnittelijoita on pyydetty tulkitsemaan älykkyys-teemaa (Intelligence).
Nykysuunnittelijoiden työ vaikuttaa kaikkien elämään useilla eri tasoilla. Helsinki Design Residency -ohjelma antaa mahdollisuuden seurata läheltä nuorten suunnittelijoiden luovia prosesseja ja hahmottaa tätä kautta muotoilun merkityksiä nykyhetkessä.
