Irit Rogoff: Art’s Expansions in the Real

The new masters’ programme in Visual Culture and Contemporary Art, ViCCA, opens its first semester with a lecture of renown theoretician, curator and organiser Irit Rogoff. ViCCA programme explores new forms of artistic production and professional agency within the broader field of contemporary art and visual culture. Theory and practice are tightly interwoven, and emphasis is put on developing each student’s artistic, curatorial and theoretical thinking. Irit Rogoff has in the previous two years been the Visiting Professor in CuMMA, Curating, Managing and Mediating Art, masters’ programme, and now when CuMMA is part of ViCCA as a major, Rogoff’s professorship is extended to the whole programme.

Irit Rogoff writes at the intersections of the critical, the political and contemporary arts practices. Rogoff is Professor of Visual Culture at Goldsmiths, a department she founded in 2002, and where she directs the ‘think tank’ PH.D in Curatorial / Knowledge, teaches periodically on the PH.D. in Research Architecture, among other things. Her curatorial work includes: ACADEMY – a series of exhibitions and symposia between 2005 – 2007 with Hamburger Kunstverein, MUKHA, Anterwerp, Van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven and Goldsmiths College, Summit – Non Aligned Initiatives in Education Culture in Berlin, 2007 and De-Regulation – with the work of Kutlug Ataman’ MuHka , Antwerp, MCA Herzylia, KW Berlin in 2006-2008. She has presented numerous keynote addresses and papers delivered at international conferences on contemporary art and cultural difference, museums and participation in contemporary art, and issues of theory and methodology of visual culture.
