TRAVEL PRINCIPLES
1. TRAVEL SLOW
HIAP is committed to travel by sea or land.
Since the start of HIAPs post-fossil transition HIAP has made a remarkable shift in its carbon emissions related to travel. HIAP has chosen to reduce or eliminate staff travel by plane as it was the organisation’s largest source of emissions. Comparing the year 2018 to 2019 HIAP has flown 85% less and reduced staff travel related emissions by 86%.
2. TRAVEL LESS
HIAP has switched from hosting Residencies from 1 to 3 month in length.
Hosting longer residencies cuts down travel related emissions as there are fewer AiR travelling to HIAP each year. This also gives the AiR more time and space to develop and implement their artistic projects.
HIAP is maximising travel miles by planning fewer trips with an increased amount of connections per trip.
This helps the organisation reduce travel related emissions while continuing to maintain international links and form new relationships.
3. TRAVEL CLOSE
HIAP is working on strengthening and forging new connections closer to Helsinki.
Working more closely with the Baltic region HIAP can continue to be a part of a vast network of art organisations and cut down travel emissions without sacrificing opportunities.
