Akira Akira
Akira Akira (b. 1981) is a Japanese-born artist who currently lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. Drawing ideas and inspirations from a number of different fields and sources such as cooking, sport and philosophy, his practice is centered on attempting to use processes and materials without necessarily knowing how. The result may look highly calculated and “designed” but at the very core of Akira’s practice is a process of making that is largely based on intuition and intrepidness. Making a new work often requires plunging into the unknown, thinking, almost casually; ‘It will probably work.’
Akira’s main area of research during his residency at HIAP will be Finnish furniture design and architecture with a particular emphasis on architectural details such as door handles and light fittings.
