Christiana Caro (b. 1980)
Currently based in Norfolk, Virginia, Christiana teaches photography at Old Dominion University, curates Clutch Gallery, and exhibits her work internationally. An interest in demarcated topographies (islands, gardens), and mediated experience through curatorial and optical interventions (local cultural museums, observatories, horizon lines), has taken her to locations in the United States and abroad. The institutions and sites she photographs are remote, displaying objects, monuments, and images of local importance.
As an artist-in-residence with HIAP she will work on Suomenlinna, a kind of museum island, with particular attention to its church’s unique central dome that doubles as a lighthouse; shining outward for sea vessels and upward for planes.
