Hannu Karjalainen (b. 1978)

Hannu Karjalainen’s current interests lie mostly in architecture and re-contextualisations of colour as used in architecture, art of advertising. As much as architecture deals with aesthetics and space, it is a manifestation of political power and social conditions surrounding it. Colour is an elusive subject matter. It is intangible and abstract as much as it is coded, branded and harnessed for different purposes. I’m interested in how meaning is attributed to a colour, and how this mechanism can be exploited by appropriation, using colour and its supposed meaning as a critical tool to investigate the world around us. Karjalainen is currently living and working in Berlin, Germany and Helsinki, Finland.
