Ielizaveta Portnova
Ielizaveta Portnova was born in Ukraine in 1981. After studying art as a child, she entered Kyiv Industrial Technical University, where she received an education as a ceramic artist.
From 2002 to 2022, she worked in a personal workshop in Kyiv.
Her works are presented in 9 museums around the world. Ielizaveta is a laureate of many international competitions. At the beginning, she worked with ceramic coating. Then there was a period of searches in the field of form. Now the author has many personal discoveries that she implements in her work. Ceramics is the language in which she speaks to the world.
During the residency period I will focus on starting a new series of objects where I combined ceramics with wool. It is important for me to experiment with combining ceramics and other materials. I will also work with the wood fire kiln which is different from my usual method of working. I need to continue creating, especially now, during the war. In this way I declare that I am still alive.
Ielizaveta Portnova’s residency at Värtsilä Residency is realised in the context of the Ukraine Solidarity Residencies programme. The current partners of the programme are AARK, Art Centre Salmela, Fairres, Goethe-Institut Finnland, HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme, Nelimarkka Museum, Pro Artibus, The Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation, The Finnish Darkroom Association, The Finnish Illustration Association Kuvittajat, and Värtsilä Artist Residency. The continuation of the programme is possible due to the support of the Finnish Ministry of Arts and Culture and Nordic Culture Point.
