Laura McLean
Laura McLean (b. 1984)
Laura McLean is a Sydney born curator, artist, and writer based in London.
During her HICP residency she is continuing research into the ontological and geo-political repercussions of the Anthropocene era, and how these paradigm shifts correspond to processes engaged by contemporary artists in their work. She is interested in tactics employed to negotiate or negate the commodity status of the art object in response to these shifts, and the rising rights of post-national, decentered subjectivities.
Past curatorial projects include the Contingent Movements Archive and Symposium, conceived for the Maldives Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale, and Crisis Complex, an exhibition and series of events held at Tin Sheds Gallery, Sydney.
McLean is a graduate of Goldsmiths College and Sydney College of the Arts, where she later lectured. She has also studied at Alberta College of Art and Design, and the Universität der Künste Berlin.
Past residencies and workshops include On Critical Tourism, Site-specificity and Post-romantic Condition, Nida Art Colony, Lithuania, 2013; Other Possible Worlds: Proposals On This Side Of Utopia, Casino Luxembourg Forum d’art Contemporain, 2011; and Expo-Exoskeleton, Porosity Studios / COFA, Dong Hua University, Shanghai, China, 2010. Awards and grants include NAVA NSW Artists’ Grant, 2012 & 2014; Australia Council Early Career New Work Grant, 2013; Tin Sheds Gallery Innovate/Curate Grant, 2012; NAVA Australian Artists’ Grant, 2012; Arts NSW Quick Response Grant, 2011; and the Australian Postgraduate Award, 2009.
