Maryna Semenkova

Maryna Semenkova (b. 1983) is a socially-engaged multimedia artist and researcher from Odesa, Ukraine, who due to the military invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine is currently based in Berlin, Germany. Semenkova uses photography and performance as her main mediums. The fundamental themes of her art practices are ecofeminism and collective memory. Her statements are always based on self-reflection and uses her body as the main instrument.

On February 28, 2022 she left Ukraine due to the invasion by the Russian Federation and since then she has never returned back. This gave rise to a new wave in her artistic practices when self-reflection has become a way of connecting with collective memory.

The war between the former members of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation and Ukraine, Maryna sees as a trigger that uncovered unreflected topics at the level of nations and states. And she considers it her task to raise these topics through visual constructions. She shows up the social phenomena through the prism of personal history.

Maryna Semenkova’s residency at Nelimarkka Museum is realised in the context of the Ukraine Solidarity Residencies programme. She will start her residency November 2023.
