Minna Pöllänen
Minna Pöllänen (b.1980) is a Finnish visual artist living and working in Helsinki and London. Pöllänen’s practice moves between photography, sculpture, installation and performance. Her work focuses on the politics of space, act of looking, and the economic and societal structures related to market society. She explores these issues through domestic objects and shapes, and more recently, through symbols of the contemporary self and its relationship to the Other.
Pöllänen holds an MA with distinction (2011) in fine art photography from London College of Communication. Her works have recently been shown in Triangle Arts Association, Brooklyn Bridge Park and A.I.R Gallery in New York, Galerie Les Territoires in Montreal, The Photographers’ Gallery and Shonibare Guest Projects in London, Skaftfell Center for Art Project Space in Seydisfjordur, Format Photography Festival in Derby, Gallery Huuto in Helsinki and The Northern Photographic Centre in Oulu.
During her 4-month residency in HIAP Pöllänen will continue working with subjects related to market society through installation-based work. She is preparing for exhibitions in Gallery Forum Box in Helsinki and Galerie Pangée in Montreal. She is also writing an essay about multi-disciplinary work as part of the artist collective Lintutorni (FI/UK/CA/NZ/DE) and researching for a new site-specific project for Specular Assembly collective (FI/UK/DE).
