Stanislava Ovchinnikova (b. 2001) is an interdisciplinary artist known for creating and contributing to the projects that address violence, trauma, and death. Shaped by the diverse training that includes photography, performance, and writing, the mediums in her hands turn into linguistic and practical tools, intimately surrendering to the essence of themes and amplifying the narratives. For example, in the visceral “Hide or Seek” she uses performance to examine corporeal memories of abuse and includes elements of consensual violence into the work; while the dreamlike “The Home Will Come Again” transmits the hallucinatory states of exile by harnessing the fallibilities of photographic film.
I am currently doing research into sexual assault PTSD and gender-based violence, questioning our understanding of justice, and reflecting on the role communities play in the emergence and progression of trauma. Alongside this I’m dedicating time to curating and organising Ukrainian film screenings, where my goal is to create opportunities for a deeper connection with Ukrainian culture. I am also mentoring young Ukrainian artists and learning Farsi.
Stanislava Ovchinnikova is currently in-residence at Kristinestad Art Residency for the period April-June 2023 Ovchinnikova’s residency is realised in the context of the Ukraine Solidarity Residencies programme.
The current partners of the programme are AARK, Art Centre Salmela, Connecting Points programme, Fairres, Goethe-Institut Finnland, HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme, Kristinestad Art Residency, Loviisa Art Support Association, Nelimarkka Museum, Pro Artibus, Tahmelan Huvila, The Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation, The Finnish Illustration Association Kuvittajat, and Värtsilä Artist Residency. The continuation of the programme is possible due to the support of Kone Foundation and Nordic Culture Point.
